Crackers for every Kerala celebration
Vishu is the big crackers day in Kerala, with Deepavali, Christmas and the temple season behind it. Each guide tells you when the day falls, what families actually light, and which boxes to put in your order.
Festivals
The days the South buys crackers
Sealed Standard Fireworks boxes at the Sivakasi wholesale price, delivered for every one of them.
Deepavali
8 November 2026
Deepavali is a smaller day in Kerala than in the states to the east. Many homes keep an oil bath at dawn, light a row of lamps at the doorstep and share sweets, and the evening's crackers are shorter and quieter than they are across the border.
What to buyVishu
Mid April, on the first day of Medam
Vishu marks the astronomical new year in Kerala. Before dawn the eldest wakes the house and leads each person, eyes covered, to the Vishukkani: konna flowers, rice, fruit, gold and a lit lamp before Krishna. Then come the kaineettam coins for the children and the Vishu sadya at noon.
What to buyOnam
August or September, in the month of Chingam
Onam is the harvest festival that welcomes Mahabali home. For ten days the pookalam grows on the front courtyard, petal by petal, and on Thiruvonam the family sits down to the sadya on a banana leaf, with games, songs and boat races through the season.
What to buyThrikkarthika
November or December, in the month of Vrischikam
On Thrikkarthika, the Karthika star in Vrischikam, homes and temples across Kerala set rows of small clay lamps along the walls, steps and courtyards at dusk, in honour of the Devi.
What to buyChristmas and New Year
25 December and 31 December
Christmas is one of Kerala's great festivals. Paper star lanterns hang on every Christian home, carol groups go door to door through December, and the churches fill for midnight mass. A week later Kochi sees the year out, nowhere louder than in Fort Kochi.
What to buyFamily occasions
The other days that need crackers
Weddings, temple festivals, housewarmings and birthdays, each with a very different list.
Temple festivals and pooram
Through the year, peaking in the pooram season
Kerala's temple year runs from the utsavams of the winter months to the pooram season of Medam, when Thrissur Pooram, the velas of the Palakkad side and the village festivals bring out the elephants, the chenda melam and the night display.
What to buyWeddings
Through the wedding season
Kerala weddings are often brief and exact: a morning muhurtham at the hall or temple, a church service, or a nikah, followed by the sadya or the reception. Crackers come at the edges, when the groom's party arrives or the couple leaves.
What to buyHousewarming
On your muhurtham day
A griha pravesham in Kerala is usually set for an early morning muhurtham. The family enters with a lit nilavilakku, milk is boiled over in the new kitchen, and relatives stay for the meal.
What to buyBirthdays
Any day of the year
A child's first birthday, a grandparent's eightieth, or an evening when the whole family is home often ends in the courtyard once the cake is cut.
