Why crackers belong to Thrikkarthika
This is a festival of lamps far more than crackers. Once the lamps are lit, a few households add sparklers or a flower pot for the children, and the quiet glow of the vilakku stays the point of the evening.
What to buy
Keep it to light, not sound: a box or two of sparklers and a few flower pots, set well away from the lamps. Many families simply keep back part of their Deepavali order for this evening.

Thrikkarthika questions
When is Thrikkarthika?
On the day the Karthika star falls in the month of Vrischikam, usually in late November or early December. Check your Malayalam calendar.
Can I use leftover Deepavali crackers?
Yes, if the boxes have stayed sealed and dry. Look over each piece before you light it and set aside anything damp or damaged.
Is it safe to light crackers near the lamps?
Keep every cracker well clear of the lamp rows, and never light one from a lamp. Use a long incense stick or a spark lighter, and keep water close by.
